The Inventions of Benjamin Franklin – American Genius

by Kunal on Aug.25, 2009, under Archive

franklin1 Never in the history of the world has there been a mind half as creative as that of American hero, Benjamin Franklin. In this brief essay, I hope to explain just a few of his many inventions. An essay about all of his inventions would fill all the volumes of an encyclopedia, which was invented by Ben Franklin as a boy so that he would have something to sell door to door. Although his first encyclopedia was filled with what we now consider to be laughable errors, the basic concept and structure has remained the same centuries later. Here is a short excerpt:

"CABINS: In these structures of wood and mud the simple folk of the country make their homes. I can see a cabin from the window of my bedroom and sometimes the lady of the cabin may be viewed disrobing by the light of her oil lamp. If you put a flame next to a cabin it will burn mightily like a stack of dry grass or the fat of a slaughtered pig. Most cabins will burn only for an hour or so, but I have seen them burn for as long as an entire night. More experimentation is needed in this area."

Awesome Pirate Facts! You Probably Didn’t Know!

by Kunal on Aug.25, 2009, under Wierd News

pirates_matthews Awesome Pirate Facts You Probably Didn’t Know!

Pirates often didn’t get enough vitamin C while on long voyages which resulted in them getting a disease called "crickets" that caused them to go blind in one eye. This is why pirates often are depicted wearing eye-patches.

When a pirate said "shiver me timbers" it was actually a request for another pirate to shave an especially difficult to reach portion of his back. While pirates would allow their faces and chests to get hairy, there was a strong superstition against hairy backs. By the way, "shiver" means "shave" and "timbers" means "lower back."

Blackbeard’s peg leg was a medical necessity, he lost his leg to diabetes, but all the other pirates got wooden legs as a fashion choice. Some of the peg legs used by pirates were actually quite gaudy and covered in jewels.

The combination to Davy Jones’ Locker was right 32, left 17, right 26.

    The Truth About Ninjas

by Kunal on Aug.25, 2009, under Wierd News

ninja_crouch The legend of the black-suited, death dealing ninja is a popular one and is based on some actual fact. Over time, however, the idea of a ninja has passed from the real world into the realm of fairy tales. This article is an attempt to set the record straight.
The ninja in popular culture is a figure of manly strength known for his skills in assassination and espionage. In truth, the word "ninja" is a combination of the Japanese words "nisamu" and "janasuma" which, when translated, means "man who is deadly and prefers the company of other men." These clans of ninjas were actually groups of homosexuals who survived by making themselves into costumed macho men so they would be left in peace.
Before the establishment of the ninja order, there were only samurai warriors. These warriors were the protectors of Japan’s ruling class and very masculine. When it was discovered that some of the samurai were gay, these gay warriors were shamed, expelled from the order and forced to go underground. Using their superior sense of style and "late night" lifestyle, the ninjas were formed. In fact, in modern Japan, gay men are often said to be following the way of the ninja.
The black jumpsuit is a modern invention. Traditionally, the ninja would dress to camouflage himself in whatever color was difficult to detect in the dark and was stylish by the standards of the day. Some suits were black, but no ninja would allow himself a closet full of only one color uniform. Teams of talented ninjas would design these uniforms and ninjas would choose them during shows featuring younger ninjas walking down a catwalk.
While the uniform of a ninja showed his sense of style, his weapons were meant to represent the sexual proclivities of the warrior. The long swords or "jinjaken" were meant to represent an engorged male phallus. The "shurikens" or throwing stars were actually meant to represent a stylized anus. How the ninja displayed these weapons would indicate whether he was a top or bottom.
Another interesting fact about ninjas is that they refused to work on the weekends and instead spent that time shopping at antique stores, going to bars and trying to find a good, reasonably priced sushi restaurant that didn’t have too much attitude.
Even today, straight men who have questions about their sexuality find themselves attracted to ninjas and ninja movies. Thankfully, we now live in a world where ninjas can openly live the lifestyle of their choice, although it is still illegal for them to marry.

    Microsoft’s OneApp Released

by Kunal on Aug.25, 2009, under News, Technology

Microsoft's OneApp ReleasedWhile the iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android get most of the attention in the mobile application space, most cell phone subscribers around the world use entry-level devices or feature phones. If it announces a major partnership with Nokia a few weeks ago, its now turn to announce its OneApp service which promises to bring smartphone like abilities to feature phones.
This also marks the beginning of Microsoft "deviation" into the non-smartphone scheme of things who, until now, had only Windows Mobile range of smatphone OS in its mobile arsenal.
As for OneApp, this happens to be a "do it all" application that will enable users to run various subsidiary applications under it that include things like Facebook, Windows Live Messenger, Twitter and Mobile Wallet. It’s a pretty small app, "weighing" in at just 150KB. The add-on apps are just 30KB in size and hence should fit in most feature phones of today. The best thing about this is that it offers users to access the service "online" as it is more of a cloud service. Which means, users do not really store and install apps to their devices.
"When people see these apps running on a feature phone, their eyes light up. It’s pretty exciting. What we’re letting you do is get access to the applications and services you want from a device you already own. If you don’t own a PC, or you share a PC, your mobile phone may be your first or only computing device," said Tim McDonough, Microsoft’s senior director of Mobile Product Management.
OneApp will be initially launched in South Africa. For those wanting more, there’s a video preview available as well – strangely showcasing the service being used on a Nokia smartphone!

You should visit the website; it certainly stirs up the imagination.
